A ribbed cream glass globe, lobed like a melon, hung from a scalloped brass cap on a reeded brass stem finished with a hand-tied brass knot. Ø 12" (30.5 cm) across the globe, 18.85" (47.9 cm) overall including the brass, on a fabric-covered cord.

The drop is the reason to specify it

The cord runs to a maximum drop of 166" — nearly 14 ft, or 4.2 m — which puts this in a category most pendants of its size cannot reach. It will hang from the top of a stairwell, a double-height hall or a mezzanine void and land at eye level where you want it, without a custom order. Cut to any shorter length at installation. For an ordinary 8 to 9 ft ceiling you will be using a fraction of the available cord, and the excess is trimmed rather than coiled.

The glass

Hand-blown cream opal, glossy rather than matte, formed into deep vertical lobes. Opal glass of this density does two things a clear globe cannot: it conceals the lamp completely from every angle, and it lights up as a whole object rather than as a bright point inside a shell. Lit, the lobes read as soft bands of graded warmth; unlit, they hold the ivory tone against a white ceiling instead of disappearing into it.

The brass

Solid brass throughout the visible hardware. The cap is scalloped to follow the lobes of the glass rather than sitting on it as a plain disc, the stem is reeded, and the suspension terminates in a tied brass knot. These are the details that place the piece: it is a decorative-classical form, not a minimal one, and it holds its own beside panelling, cornice or a period stair.

Sizing and placement

At 12" this is a single-point pendant rather than a room's main light. Over a kitchen island, hang two or three in a row at 30" to 36" (76 to 91 cm) above the counter, spaced 24" to 30" (60 to 75 cm) apart. Over a bedside table, drop it to around 20" (50 cm) above the surface and it replaces a lamp entirely, freeing the table. In a stairwell, hang a single one low into the void so it is read from the floors above as well as below.

Installation

Ceiling mounted on a 5.12" (13 cm) canopy. At 6.16 lb (2.8 kg) it fixes to a standard ceiling outlet box with no additional support. The cord is cut to length at installation, so decide the finished height before the electrician terminates it — this is the one step that cannot be undone on site. Where several hang together, mark and cut all of them against the same datum rather than measuring each from its own canopy, since ceilings are rarely level.

Lamping

1 x E26 medium base. Bulb not supplied. Because the opal glass hides the lamp entirely, appearance is irrelevant and output is what matters: a 60W-equivalent LED at 2700K fills a 12" globe evenly without hot-spotting at the crown. Avoid a lamp with a long neck, which pushes the filament below the glass centre and throws the brightness downward. Where several hang in a row, use identical lamps — a colour temperature mismatch is obvious across opal glass. The standard build is not dimmable, and a dimmable version is made on request when noted at the time of order.

Care

Dust the glass with a dry microfibre cloth. Wipe the brass with a barely damp cloth and dry immediately; do not use metal polish, which will cut through the finish and leave bright patches, and keep it off the knot, where polish collects in the winding and dries white.
