An oval of stone, floating on light.

Vertical alabaster panels arranged in a racetrack oval — curved at the ends, parallel along the sides, descending in four staggered tiers from a single brass canopy. The whole fixture hangs on thin steel cables rather than chain, which gives the impression that the alabaster is floating rather than suspended. Brass studs perimeter the upper edge — a small architectural detail that catches light and reads as deliberate rather than decorative.

Joan sits in the contemporary-organic register of the catalog: warmer than a clean architectural fixture, softer than an Art Deco statement piece, more sculptural than a rectangular linear chandelier. The shape — why oval, why tiered.

Most linear chandeliers are rectangular. The Joan is deliberately oval because rectangular fixtures, however well-designed, always read as engineered rather than composed. The curved ends of the racetrack silhouette do something rectangular geometry can't: they soften the relationship between the fixture and whatever sits beneath it. Above an oval dining table the silhouettes echo. Above a rectangular table the curves balance the linearity. Above a kitchen island, the rounded ends prevent the fixture from feeling installed.

The four-tier construction — each tier slightly smaller than the one above it, descending in stepped layers — distributes the light across multiple horizontal planes rather than emitting from a single source. The upper tier casts light upward onto the ceiling. The lower tiers diffuse downward through the panels. The combination creates the multi-directional warm wash that defines well-designed dining lighting.

About the alabaster.

The panels are hand-cut from solid Italian alabaster — vertical slabs, individually shaped and hung from the brass frame ring of each tier. The veining of every panel is unique to the block it was cut from, and the panels within a single Joan are never matched. Heavy veining alongside soft cloudy panels, sometimes side by side. This is intentional — matched stone reads as factory output, varied stone reads as real material, hand-selected.

You can choose the veining character at checkout:

• More veining — heavily patterned, dramatic, high-contrast
• Less veining — softer, cloudier, more uniformly translucent
• Random selection — we choose from stock

About the brass.

The canopy, cable hardware, and perimeter studs are solid brass — not plated. We use solid brass at this scale because the cable suspension distributes the fixture's weight through small contact points where plated brass would wear and reveal the underlying metal within a year or two. The studs along the upper perimeter aren't decorative bolts — they're the hardware that holds the upper alabaster tier to the frame, exposed deliberately as a design element. Honest construction made visible.

Default finish is brass. Other finishes available on request — specify at checkout for chrome, brushed black, or polished nickel.

The floating effect.

Most large chandeliers hang on chain, which reads as suspended weight — the fixture and the chain together form the visual composition. The Joan hangs on thin braided steel cables, almost invisible against most ceiling colors. The fixture appears to float roughly 60–100cm below the brass canopy rather than hanging. This is the visual move that separates Joan from heavier-feeling alabaster fixtures in your catalog: it has presence without weight.

Bulbs and light.

LED G9 bulbs strongly recommended — lower heat extends alabaster life, lower actual draw eliminates dimmer load concerns. Modern G9 LEDs run 4–6W actual draw per socket, meaning the 16-light fixture pulls ~80W total at LED equivalents.

Dimmable on standard TRIAC 120V AC — Lutron Caseta, standard US residential dimmers, most home automation.

Custom IP65 wet-rated version available.

Standard Joan ships dry-rated for indoor use. For wet-zone applications — covered outdoor dining, pool houses, primary bathrooms above freestanding tubs — the Joan is available with full IP65 specification: sealed driver, gasketed canopy, wet-rated LED.

Add $650 at checkout for IP65. Lead time extends 3–4 weeks.

Cable suspension.

Thin braided stainless steel cables, default drop up to 100cm / 39", fully adjustable at installation by the electrician. Longer cables available on request for double-height foyers, two-story rooms, or extreme ceiling heights. Specify ceiling height at checkout and we ship cables sized to your specification at no additional cost.
